Language Requirements
If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate that you can cope with the language demands of an English-language university.
If you apply to an undergraduate program at Lakehead University, you may meet our English-language requirements if you successfully completed, or are in the process of completing, 3 full years of recent study in an English-language school system.
If English is not your native language, and you cannot verify that you recently studied in an English-language school system for more than 3 full years of full-time study, you will be required to present proof of English-language proficiency.
Lakehead University accepts the following as proof of English-language proficiency:
- Successful completion of a recognized language test (e.g., CAEL, Cambridge, IELTS, Pearson, and TOEFL) with the required minimum scores.
- Successful completion of Lakehead University’s Academic English Program (AEP).
- Successful completion of one of our approved Pathway Partner’s ESL programs.
Some programs (e.g., Bachelor of Science in Nursing) may require a higher score on a recognized language test than the minimums listed. Completing our AEP is not an option for these programs. Refer to our English-language requirements for more information.
ENG4U cannot be used to satisfy the English-language proficiency requirement.
Admission
Offers of Admission for Ontario High School Students
Basic Requirements for Admission
You must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent and a minimum of six 4U/M courses or equivalent, including program-specific prerequisite courses, with a minimum 70% overall final average (calculated using the best six 4U/M courses).
Failed and Repeated Courses
If you present a repeated 4U/M course, we will count the best grade achieved in the course toward your admission average.
Timing and Process for Admission Decisions
Early conditional offers of admission will be made in December 2022 and will continue on a rolling basis. To be considered for early admission, you must be registered in at least six 4U/M courses, including the appropriate prerequisites for your chosen program. Early conditional offers of admission will be based on final first-semester Grade 12, interim and/or final 3U/M grades.
All offers of admission are conditional pending the successful completion of the OSSD with a minimum of six 4U/M courses or equivalent, including any outlined conditions and program-specific prerequisite courses, with a minimum overall average as outlined in your offer (calculated using the best six 4U/M courses).
In most instances, if you are not offered admission to your first-choice program, you will automatically be considered for admission to an alternative program, provided you meet the admission requirements of that program.
Alternative Offers
If you do not meet the admission requirements for your program of choice but do meet Lakehead University's general admission requirements, you will automatically be considered for an alternate program.
