Language Requirements

English Proficiency Requirements

If your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of your English proficiency. You can submit a minimum score on a test of English proficiency or complete the Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) program. If required by testing centres, Laurier’s institution code is 0893.

You may request an exemption to the English proficiency requirement if you studied in an English-language school system on a full-time basis for a minimum of 3 years. Visit the Laurier website for exemption instructions.

Study Academic English at Laurier

The Laurier English & Academic Foundation (LEAF) program is an academic English program designed to prepare you for success in university. You begin in a LEAF program level according to your most recent English proficiency test score. The LEAF program is offered at the Brantford campus.

If you meet the academic requirements for your program but do not meet Laurier’s English proficiency requirement, you may receive an offer of admission that is conditional upon completing the LEAF program. You must first be eligible for LEAF program levels 3, 4 or 5 to receive an offer. After successfully completing level 5, you can begin studying in your program full time.

Laurier English & Academic Foundation Program

There are two 14-week terms (fall and winter) and two 8-week intensive summer terms in each calendar year. The 14-week terms are the same length as our fall and winter undergraduate terms, allowing LEAF program students to interact with both domestic and international students during the busiest times of the year.

In Level 5 of the LEAF program, you are required to complete a course for credit, which helps you get a head start towards completing your degree. To complete the LEAF program successfully, you must achieve a minimum grade of 70% in each LEAF program course, complete a half-credit university course and obtain a minimum overall average of 70% in Level 5.

Check the table to determine if you are eligible for LEAF levels 3, 4 or 5.
